On the one hand, cotton production has been hit hard in recent years by climate change (CC). On the other hand, the international community agrees on the need to promote lower-carbon agricultural practices. In this context, BCI is coordinating a capacity building program to help cotton farmers adopt good production practices, including lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and more resilient to CC. SalvaTerra was therefore commissioned to develop PowerPoint training modules on CC issues for cotton production. These modules were to be used directly by the national teams to train local actors in person in the 17 member countries of BCI (2 million cotton producers), but also downloadable on the Mindflash platform to be disseminated much more widely.
The training modules produced covered the following topics: - Introduction: What is CC? What are the links between CC and cotton production? What are the adaptation and mitigation measures? What is BCI's approach to CC? - Mitigation: What are the GHGs to be controlled? At the territorial level, how can changes in land use be minimized? At the plot level, how can carbon storage in the soil be improved? - Adaptation: Why adapt to CC? How to adapt varieties? How can tillage and residue management be adapted? How can water management practices be adapted? - Climate finance: What is climate finance? How to finance climate-smart agriculture? What are the sources of climate finance, at the global/national/local levels?
Creation of a training course on the challenges of CC for cotton cultivation, which can be used in the 17 member countries of BCI (2 million producers): Introduction (origins of CC, links between CC and cotton, BCI's approach to CC, etc.); Mitigation (GHGs to be controlled, changes in land use, carbon storage in soils, etc.); Adaptation (adaptation measures concerning varieties, tillage, residue management, water management, etc.); Climate finance (definition, financing climate-smart agriculture, potential sources, etc.)
