The Decentralized Forest Management Program (GEDEFOR2) implements capacity-building actions for forestry officers. This one-week training course on the management of classified forests was intended for 25 agents.
10 themes were to be addressed: (i) State of play of classified forests in Mali, (ii) Concepts of sustainable forest management and forest management, (iii) Key concepts and principles for the development of a forest management and management plan for a classified forest in Mali, (iv) Understanding of the main drivers of forest degradation in West Africa and Mali, (v) Monitoring of the degradation of classified forests by remote sensing (satellite images), (vi) Decentralization and participatory forest management, (vii) Local Convention on Natural Resource Management in Mali, (viii) Management of classified forests in Burkina Faso, (ix) Management of classified forests in Côte d'Ivoire, (x) Community-based management of natural resources in Madagascar.
The training used the following tools:
- Presentations based on slide shows compiled in a full-color training manual. Each theme gave rise to questions and answers between participants and trainers and open exchanges between participants. - Short films illustrating concrete practices (on community-based forest management, local NRM conventions, assisted natural regeneration, etc.) from around the world (Niger, Cameroon, DRC, Madagascar, Nepal, Guatemala, France, Quebec, etc.). - Quizzes of 20 multiple-choice questions by theme, distributed at the end of each training day. Again, the participants individually sought the solution(s), before a collective correction was facilitated by the trainers. In the end, the evaluation of the training by the participants was good: the satisfaction rate by theme fluctuated between 3 (useful theme) and 5 (essential theme), and the organization of the training was judged to be very appropriate overall.
Design and facilitation of a one-week training for 25 Malian forest officers on the management of classified forests: Presentations (inventory of classified forests in Mali, concepts of sustainable forest management and forest management, decentralization and participatory management of forests, management of classified forests in Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Madagascar, etc.); Short films and debates on concrete management practices around the world; Quizzes and self-assessment of knowledge.
