Context of the service

The project "Optimizing the production of goods and services provided by Mediterranean forests in a context of global changes", initiated by the Silva Mediterranea Committee of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and subsidized by the French Global Environment Facility (FFEM), aims to capitalize on existing knowledge on the production of goods and services by Mediterranean forests, generate new results and lessons learned on these issues, and foster regional dialogue on mitigation and adaptation issues in the forest sector.
In this context, the project supports pilot projects on climate change adaptation and forest-based climate change mitigation.

Services provided

The support involved (i) the drafting of a guide for the identification of REDD+ projects and energy efficiency projects in the fuelwood sectors and (ii) the execution of a pre-feasibility study of a REDD+ project in the Maamora forest, Morocco. This study included (i) the measurement of the state of degradation of the site and the evolution of that state, (ii) diagnosis of existing pressures on forests, (iii) modelling of future evolution of the state of degradation in the absence of REDD+ activity (baseline scenario), (iv) an assessment of the mitigation potential of potential activities, (v) consideration of leakage (shifting pressures to areas outside the project site) and (vi) consideration of the social and environmental impacts of possible activities. These results were disseminated during two-day workshops in Algeria, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia.
