Context of the service

During a workshop organized in April 2013 by the Unit for the Implementation of the Enhanced Integrated Framework in Chad (UMOCIRT), eight value chains, including sesame, were identified as strategic for the country's development.
Few studies have been conducted on this value chain and those that do exist have gaps: focus on the south of the country (little information on Guéra, very little on the east of the country), certain issues not covered (link with international markets, critical analysis of production and export statistics, international quality criteria of sesame, etc.).
On the basis of these findings, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has launched this study, which aims to better understand these value chains and set up projects to support their development.

Services provided

The analyses were based on a review of the bibliography (internet searches, collection of paper and electronic documents from ONDR, ITRAD, DPSA, BELACD, etc.) and interviews with 23 groups of actors, representing the Government, NGOs, producers, private entrepreneurs, etc., in various localities (N'Djamena, Moundou, Koumra, Sarh, etc.).
The value chain was described: production (cultivated varieties, cultural practices, location, quantities, flows, actors, prices/margins, constraints, etc.), transport (costs, constraints, organization, etc.), processing (products and by-products, costs, constraints, organization, etc.), export (volumes, destinations, taxes, constraints, etc.), consumption (consumption trends, consumer preferences, etc.). ...
The project document focused on the following objectives: Improved productivity and sustainability of sesame cultivation; Organization of marketing (quality, processing, export and domestic consumption).
