Context of the service
Nearly 40,000 ha of forest would disappear each year in Côte d'Ivoire due to the expansion of cocoa plantations. The Ivorian cocoa sector, the world's leading sector with 45% of global production and the country's leading agricultural export sector, is therefore strategic in the fight against deforestation. With this in mind, the Ivorian President affirmed, at the United Nations Climate Summit in September 2014, his desire to produce "cocoa 0 deforestation" from 2017.
A commitment by Ivorian cocoa agro-industrialists, such as that made by GAR and Nestlé in 2010 to produce 0-deforestation palm oil, is therefore particularly relevant: it would reduce deforestation while strengthening the market share of agro-industrialists in a context of growing demand for sustainable products.
Services provided
As part of an 18-month research and development project, SalvaTerra and its associated experts from ICRAF and CURAT supported two agro-industrialists (Cémoi and Mondelez) to initiate the establishment of 0-deforestation cocoa supply chains:
- Identification of interested agro-industrialists and preparation of a multi-year roadmap;
- Identification of pilot areas (criteria: risk of deforestation, presence of cooperatives affiliated with agro-industrialists, availability of high-resolution satellite images to monitor deforestation, etc.);
- Implementation of the High Carbon Stock (HCS) approach and identification of cultivable areas vs. protection zones;
- Preparation of forest inventory devices (sampling plan, survey sheets, etc.) and training of agents;
- Identification of alternative technical routes for sustainable cocoa production, after review of various experiences;
- Creation of an ad hoc traceability system to better track cocoa flows, from the field to the factory.
